The Mausoleum of Galla Placida
Galla Placidia, sister of the Emperor Honorius, had this small Latin cross mausoleum built around the middle of the 5th century. It has remained unchanged for 1,600 years. The interior decorations are extraordinary, emanating a fascinating beauty: it is a carpet of mosaics, made of glass paste tesserae. Stylised stars and flowers on a blue background adorn the ceiling, with mesmerising perfection, endowing it with eternal light.
